With this styling guide we want to talk you through our recommendations divided into rooms and therefore help you choose the right window shade. Let’s turn you into an expert for styling window coverings!

Window treatments can be mounted indoor or outdoor. However one room may have different needs when it comes to fabric, functions and style as another. We have therefore divided the fitting of window coverings into indoor, outdoor and further into their individual subcategories.

Indoor window shades

Whether you’re in need of a shade for the kitchen, bedroom, living room or even a car. We talk about them all.

Kitchen window shades

A kitchen is made for cooking, right? However this doesn’t mean it has to be neglected when thinking of interior design. On the contrary. A bright, clean and fresh kitchen can be a motivational trigger to start swinging the wooden spoon and become a chef oneself. One way to up the comfort level in the kitchen is with window shades for kitchen. Kitchen window treatments should be able to handle the splash zones, let enough light through and look stylish in the meantime.

Kitchen roller shades

Roller shades in the kitchen come especially in handy due to their crisp look and trouble-free cleaning. When cooking or washing the dishes one of the main requirements is light. At times you might want to enjoy the outside view, which would make the kitchen experience even more pleasant. A light-filtering roller shade is therefore the perfect option. They consist of opaque and translucent strips of fabric, which can be aligned in multiple ways to either keep enjoying the view and retain as much light as possible or gain more privacy without fully sacrificing light transmittance. And the best part: Light-filtering Day&Night roller shades come in many different colors, from colorful to neutral, suitable for various interior designs.

Bedroom shades

When thinking of the bedroom, sleep, privacy and intimacy comes to mind. In general, the level of privacy and intimacy should be as high as possible. Let’s go further. What makes a good nights’ sleep? Apart from the bed and mattress itself, our sleep quality is affected by the degree to how much light still enters the room as well as the room’s temperature. The former should be as low as possible, because too much light coming from street lights etc. can distract our brain from going into sleep-mode. On the other hand, the latter should be just right: neither too low nor too high. (In fact: The best temperature for a good sleep is between 60ºF to 68ºF). Therefore, window coverings for bedrooms should provide privacy, room-darkening and temperature control.

Roller shades for bedroom

One way to achieve the above requirements would be with bedroom roller shades. These blackout roller shades are equipped with a fully opaque fabric that doesn’t let any light or prying eyes through. On top, the fabric side facing the window is covered with a special silver coating made for temperature control, making sure you’re just right both in summer and winter. Available in various comforting colors.

Cellular shades

Take the above requirements and tick them off with an “A++” and add extra points for style. A Honeycomb cellular shade is the Rolls-Royce among window treatments. Maximum room-darkening, privacy and even greater temperature control owing to air-trapping in between the honeycomb shaped cells.

Living room shades

A living room should be cozy and evoke warm feelings. It is the common room for friends’ and family gatherings, movie nights and typically the most used room in our home. Shades for living room should for these reasons be adjustable in light transmittance and stylish. Living rooms are the best way to unleash your inner interior designer and the easiest to brag with your furnishing skills.

Pleated Shades

These window coverings come in 40 different colors with which you’ll certainly find a color matching your walls, furniture or desired mood. A pleated shade adds depth to your windows while remaining sleek. They’re top down bottom up window treatments, meaning they can be adjusted from the top or the bottom giving endless possibilities of light transmittance. The pleated fabric itself lets light through to a certain extent, hence you’ll access a beautiful and unique play of light in your living room.

Curtains for living room

These velvet curtains with their almost fully room-darkening fabric are ideal for creating a cinema-like atmosphere or simply for adding that extra touch of comfort in a luxurious way. Blackout curtains are best suited for combining window coverings like pleated shades and blackout curtains (see more below).

Basement window shades

The requirements for a basement are rather straight-forward. As much light as possible has to be retained while still keeping interested eyes away. Additionally, basement windows are rather small, rectangular and typically high up the wall. From all available window treatments, we recommend pleated window coverings in light colors, such as White or Silver, to retain as much light flow as possible, even when fully closed. Browse the Premium Collection in White Day or the Dolomite Collection in Cold Morning.

Balcony sun shades

Whether it’s for sitting on the balcony or enjoying the beautiful balcony from within, this ‘room’ should not be neglected and comes with its own requirements as well. A balcony can easily turn into a sauna, making the adjoining room just as uncomfortable to be in. The same goes for the colder months as a balcony can breezily let more cold air in than a regular window or wall. Thus, sun shades for balconies should offer temperature control as well as still some light transmittance. Available in stylish colors, thermal pleated shades are the way to go. Create your individual cozy oasis but with more comfort.

Office shades

When setting up your office space, we think about a comfortable chair and a good quality desk with enough space. Only the minority thinks about the windows, when in fact, the windows can ruin everything you’ve thought about so far. Why? Think about summer and then think about how hot and stuffy a room can get without the right window coverings. Concentration and work seem impossible.

Choose window coverings that act as an insulating barrier while still letting enough light through. The Thermo Collection in light hues and especially a white thermal pleated shade takes the sun’s glare away and makes working much more bearable due to its temperature controlling abilities.

Shades for bathroom window

Let’s take the bathroom. Crucial factors are privacy and enough light transmittance. You don’t really need any temperature control or darkening effects in the bathroom. In order to keep the bathroom flooded with light for mastering your morning’s get-ready-routine and always retaining precious privacy in the meantime, stick to pleated window treatments in lighter hues. Our experts stand by the Premium and Dolomite Collection for their classic and timeless appearance, while encompassing all essential functional attributes.

Window shades for cars

Cars aren’t really a room in our house, however they can feel like home, too. Campers are the best example. Whether it’s for privacy reasons or preventing the sun’s heat to warm up the inside, window treatments can come in handy in automobiles as well. Here, the easiest window coverings to mount and the most useful ones are pleated shades or cellular shades with drilling. For camper window shades we specifically recommend a pleated shade in the Thermo Collection to truly bring out the shades’ maximum potential.

Outdoor shades

Window treatments can also serve a purpose in the outside areas of our homes, let it be on patios or conservatories and winter gardens.

Outdoor shades with side tracks

Conservatories and winter gardens often solely have roof windows instead of traditional ceilings. These roof windows can also be covered. Window treatments to cover these types of windows need to have some kind of additional support to prevent sagging as otherwise they would just hang down in the middle. Skylight pleated shades are the optimal selection, because they’re equipped with sturdy aluminum side tracks. Don’t shun your winter garden due to high indoor temperatures and create your own oasis of well-being now.

Sun shades for patios

Patios come in various different forms, sizes and designs. At times one may seek some privacy while sitting on the patio. However roofs and the majority of covers for patios can be quite expensive, especially aluminum and motorized versions. For covered patios, i.e. patios with a roof, there is a much simpler and cheaper way for a comfort upgrade: a light-filtering roller shade. These window coverings can be mounted on the patio’s top beam and rolled up or down as desired. On top of this, a Day&Night roller shade still allows for the enjoyment of the outside view!

Drapes and shades: Double the fun!

Something that rhymes so well has to be a showstopper in interior design as well! And it indeed is. A pleated shade adds depth and interesting texture to your window, while velvet curtains are the champions in upgrading the coziness and comfort level of a room. Combine them both and you’ll get a dynamic duo ready to conquer the world!

Double covers mean double functions. Shades with curtains don’t just look like million dollars but offer the best possible functional properties too.
