Frequently asked questions

The best blackout curtains in terms of color and fastening method are dependent on your personal preferences as well as the possibilities available for mounting. As for the color you can either go by the overall color theme of the room with a color from the same color family or choose a contrasting color to make your windows pop. Blackout curtains are made out of exclusive velvet fabrics with a luxurious feel and are available in a wide range of colors, which allow you to choose the ideal color for your needs.

The best fastening method is either the one that fits the space above your window best or matches the aesthetics of the room. An assembly with eyelets is possible only on a curtain rod. Eyelets or grommets are the classic and timeless mounting option for curtains. They have been and will continue to be around for a very long time. Not only because they match a lot of interior decors but also because of their incredibly fast installation and smooth movement along the rod.

On the other hand, curtains with tunnel tape can be mounted on a curtain rod as well as a rail. Rails are an excellent choice for those who want no sight of any hardware and the top of the curtain to hide. Choosing rails matching the wall color and mounting them where the wall and ceiling meet, gives an illusion of the curtains being part of the wall. Another benefit: The folds of the curtain elongate the walls making them appear higher! A clear win-win.

To answer the question what do blackout curtains do and how do they work we first need to look at what are blackout curtains made of and what is blackout curtain fabric. Blackout curtain fabric is a mid to fully opaque fabric which is typically made out of thick and tightly-woven polyester in a velvet look. This fabric not only provides a rich and opulent touch to the room, but most importantly allows for an entire or almost complete darkening of the room, making it the perfect window covering for bedrooms or living rooms during movie night! Speaking of movie night, due to the features of blackout fabric these window treatments also allow for better acoustics as well as blocking out noises from outside.

Yes. The tightly-woven and high-quality fabrics provide a full darkening which as a result leads to pleasant room temperatures and blocking the heat coming from the sun. To answer the question on can blackout curtains block heat, it is safe to say that if no sun rays can enter the room, there is no opportunity and reason for the room temperature to rise.

On the other hand, will blackout curtains keep cold out? Just like blackout curtains being the perfect accessory for summer, they’re just as good for the colder months. Due to the thick material, the cool air takes much longer to enter the room through the glass pane from the outside and the warm air on the inside doesn’t escape that fast to the outside. Therefore it is the ideal all-rounder for the whole year!

Yes. Noise from the outside penetrates to a large extent through windows. Therefore, any kind of window covering is useful. However the thicker the material the less noise comes through. To answer the question on will blackout curtains reduce noise we can say that thick velvet blackout curtains come in handy due to their tightly-woven fabric and make a tremendous difference to windows with no window coverings. When living near busy streets or surroundings the best option for maximum noise canceling would be a combination of blackout curtains and pleated shades.

The most energy and heat is lost through windows, because they’re the thinnest part of our walls and most windows are not 100% airtight. Therefore energy loss takes place due to radiation through glazing or cracks/irregularities in the window frame, which are completely natural.

Window coverings and especially thermal blackout curtains save energy in the colder months by keeping the warm air longer in the room. They prevent the warm air from escaping through the window and its irregularities. As the warm air does not escape that quickly, there is no need to heat the room for a longer amount of time, which as a result reduces the heating costs.
This also applies for the summer months and air conditioning. Keeping windows covered with thermal window coverings automatically results in less time the air conditioning has to run.

Blackout curtains come in a wide variety of sizing options. In particular personalized or custom-made blackout curtains offer an extraordinary range of sizes. Having the possibility to choose from a low minimum width and height to an exceptionally wide width and high heights while going in steps of 1 mm enables millions of size combinations to choose from. It is even possible to order blackout curtains with a width up to over 100 inches and a height of 175 inches.

Blackout curtains come in many different colors – from whites, beiges to colorful tones as well as dark colors. In order to achieve a darkening effect there is no need to necessarily choose dark curtains and give up on the wish of light curtains. Blackout curtains are made out of a high-quality, thick polyester fabric that also provides a darkening effect when choosing neutral tones like a white colored fabric, because the essence lies in the composition of the material and not the color. For this reason, it is always recommended to choose high quality materials.

Hanging blackout curtains is simple and does not require a professional installation team. The trickiest part may be attaching the curtain rod or rail to the ceiling or wall. Hereby, it is best to stick to the installation instructions provided by the supplier.
However if a rod or rail is already mounted, the installation of curtains is done in a couple of minutes, without drilling and does not require any additional tools.

Curtains with Eyelets/Grommets: It depends on whether the eyelets are incorporated into the curtain fabric or attached above the fabric edge.
For the latter, it is sufficient when the eyelets are placed one after the other on the curtain rod with the fluffy velvet fabric facing the room. This also answers the question on which way do blackout curtains face.
Curtains with incorporated eyelets should be folded in an accordian-style at first in a way that the front side of two eyelets face each other. The folded fabric can now be slid onto the fabric rod creating even folds.

Curtains with Tunnel tape: The advantage of curtains with tunnel tape is having the option to mount them either on a curtain rod or rail. The installation method on a rod is similar to installing curtains that have eyelets attached above the fabric. Simply slide the loops of the tunnel tape, which reach over the entire height of the tunnel tape, one after the other on the rod.
For an installation on a rail it is required to get matching hooks for the rail first. They are sometimes already provided with the curtain rail. The tunnel tape contains small loops, which are placed at three different heights letting you choose the amount of fabric that should be above and under the hooks. Pick one level and slide the hooks at equal intervals into the loops. The final step is to slide the curtain with the attached hooks onto the curtain rail.

In addition, it is possible to hang blackout curtains over blinds. But how to install blackout curtains over blinds? The installment of blackout curtains is no different than above. The crucial part is the mounting method of the blinds. For best results and as little interference as possible pleated blinds should be mounted directly in front of the window pane with drilling or gluing.

Yes, it is possible to wash blackout curtains and keep them as good as new. But how to wash blackout curtains and are blackout curtains machine washable? Yes, blackout curtains are machine washable, but should not be washed hotter than 30 degrees Celsius (about 85ºF) on gentle cycle and only with maximum 50% of machine load. Use a mild detergent without an optical brightener and spin at low speed. The eyelets on curtains with eyelets can remain in the curtain as they are washable and in addition non-detachable.
As an alternative, blackout curtains are also hand-washable. Dab individual stains with a mixture of soap and water and rinse with clear water afterwards. Keep in mind to not rub, brush, wring or boil.

The last step on how to clean blackout curtains would be regarding the drying process. They should be hung up in a damp condition to prevent creasing. Do not tumble dry.

And when it comes to dry cleaning, can blackout curtains be dry cleaned? Unfortunately no, because the fabric and its features could get damaged.

Blackout curtains should not be ironed in order to keep the fabrics features in tact. But can blackout curtains be steamed? Yes. A fast and safe alternative to ironing would be steaming the curtain. However our advice would be to only consider steaming if it’s absolutely necessary.

Blackout curtains are an excellent way to achieve additional cover for your windows, because they can be installed over already existing window coverings like roller shades or pleated shades. This gives the possibility to close the one window covering that is most needed at this moment – or both for a full dark mode!
Blackout curtains are also incredible as a backdrop for videos or photos. Thanks to the easy installation and wide color range they can be changed as often as possible.

On the other hand, do there exist reasons why blackout curtains are bad? Not really. When choosing high-quality and tightly-woven fabrics there really are only benefits like energy-efficiency and improvements in the room’s acoustics. However, some may ask are blackout curtains bad for your sleep, but the answer to the question is also rather a benefit than a downside, because due to the fabric’s high darkening features the possibility of oversleeping rises. With blackout curtains you would therefore certainly get a good night’s sleep – or a nap at any time of the day really!

At times even the best blackout curtains aren’t enough to fully darken the room. This could be due to bright traffic lights in front of the window or sometimes simply the sun on a bright sunny day. When situations like this occur we recommend to consider the combination of two window coverings on one window like blackout curtains and pleated shades for instance. This offers not only the opportunity of more variation when it comes to light control but also an absolute darkening effect if needed.
